of “Ilha” in Rua das Aldas, Porto |

Going along Aldas street we enter the
door of n.º 18, climb up a narrow stairway and arrive to a space encompassed
by granite walls. Eleven precarious buildings, densely populated gave way to
five new houses. Given the terrible conditions of the “ilha”, the project
foresees the renovation of the buildings, re-using some of the spatial,
structural and volumetric elements. When developing the project we selected
the distinguishing elements of the place: the thick granite walls that
confine the corner, which together with the rocks at street level, give the
place the peculiar image of a castle marked by small openings facing the
